Roadmap 2020 insights

Deutsche Börse Group is well on track with its growth strategy “Roadmap 2020”. We now want to take the opportunity to look back at our growth agenda and successes of the past 18 months: in our series “Roadmap 2020 insights” we showcase exciting contributions and developments from our various business areas.

One key element of our “Roadmap 2020” is to improve and accelerate secular growth. A challenge we see as an opportunity because it allows us to shape market structures for the better, resulting in more fairness and a balanced treatment for all market participants. How do we do this?

For example, by continuing to support all efforts around financial stability and by working with authorities around the globe to offer our clients efficient solutions. We support the financial markets by providing market-led solutions for the challenges ahead of us, among others with our derivatives exchange Eurex.

Eurex - marketplace of choice for the global derivatives community

Eurex offers a broad range of international benchmark products and operates the most liquid fixed income and equity index derivatives markets in the world with about 2,000 products across nine asset classes, featuring open and low-cost electronic access.

With new market models, Eurex supports the buy side while at the same time serving the sell side’s needs. The market structure roadmap aims at strengthening fairness in the price discovery process. To explore the technology paths ahead, we have entered strategic partnerships to build a trusted digital asset ecosystem.

Sustainability pays off: Eurex creates the first ESG futures benchmark

There are numerous new products we have launched to achieve the self-imposed goals for our Roadmap 2020. One of the best example is our new ESG index futures, an answer to the changing investment behaviour of our customers.

Investors are searching for long-term successful asset protection and stable revenues while sustainable and social aspects get more and more important.

We have observed the growing trend for ESG (environmental, social and governance) criteria being applied as an overlay by asset owners and asset managers.

As a response, Eurex listed three ESG Futures based on our existing benchmark equity index products as well as the demand for sophisticated or diversified index concepts that move away from existing benchmarks and derivatives to versions that reflect these sustainability factors.

The three new futures on the ESG versions of highly liquid European STOXX® benchmarks (FESX and FXXP) covering ESG Exclusions, Low Carbon and Climate Impact help market participants address the challenges and opportunities of ESG-driven asset management. Asset owners can further manage unwanted sustainability risks, seek additional alpha and better meet their various investment mandates.

With the innovative ESG derivatives segment Eurex launched the first European futures on ESG versions of benchmark indices in February. Until late July, 235,000 contracts have been traded with € 782 million of open interest. The recent CTFC approval now gives US-based investors also direct access to these attractive hedging instruments.

But let’s hear from our clients on sustainable investing:

What is the importance of ESG for Societe Generale's customers?

Over the last years, sustainability has become increasingly important. We spoke to Isabelle Millat, Head of Sustainable Investment Solutions at Societe Generale Corporate and Investment Banking - SGCIB, about the role ESG plays for their customers.

We consider sustainability to be a long-term driver of investment risks and returns.

Olivier Rudez, Head Flexible and Absolute Return Paris, BNP Paribas Asset Management

For companies, it is increasingly a must-have to include the sustainability perspective into their business, products and services.

Magnus Linder, Head of Derivatives, Swedbank Robur

By being a market maker of ESG products we are pleased we can now use our core competency to also enable investors to invest responsibly and at a fair price. We are very happy to be part of this STOXX and Eurex initiative.

Rick van Leeuwen, Head of Institutional Trading at IMC Trading

With initiatives like these, we do not only enhance our market models and boost fairness and transparency, but we also improve our services for end clients as well as going the next consistent steps on our Roadmap 2020.
