May sees mixed trading figures for Eurex

Despite a slight decrease in total trading volume, Eurex, Europe’s largest derivatives exchange and part of Deutsche Börse Group, saw increases in equity and equity index derivatives trading and a number of new trading records.

The overall number of traded contracts was 173.2 million compared to 184.0 million in May 2018, a decrease of 6 percent. Increases of 3 and 8 percent respectively for traded contracts in European equity index derivatives and European equity derivatives contrasted with traded contracts in European interest rates derivatives. These stood at 50.6 million, a decline of 25 percent year-on-year (67.4 million in May 2018).

May saw a number of new monthly records: over 2.79 million VSTOXX® Futures and Options  and more than 343,000 Total Return Futures  contracts were traded. Eurex’s trading hours extension  also proved successful with its best month’s trading so far: more than 900,000 contracts were traded during Asian hours with a new daily record on 31 May of almost 229,000 traded contracts.

The European Energy Exchange (EEX), the leading energy exchange in Europe, saw a significant increase in gas trading with a volume increase of 63 percent in May 2019 to 254.3 TWh (156.0 TWh May 2018). Volumes on EEX Group’s spot and derivatives markets in power increased by 7 percent to 481.8 TWh (449.9 TWh in May 2018).

Eurex Repo, the leading provider for international financing in the secured money market business (repo and securities lending), saw an overall increase of 19 percent in average outstanding volume in the Repo markets in comparison to May 2018. This shows the continuing success of Eurex’s Repo Partnership Program.
