Record Trading Volume on the Spot Market: 50,000 MWh

EEX posts highest volume ever traded on an electricity exchange in Germany

The European Energy Exchange (EEX) set a new record in trading volume on Thursday with 50,087 MWh of electricity traded on its spot market. Never before has so much volume been traded on an electricity exchange in Germany. EEX beat its old record, set on March 14 with 40,771 MWh, by more than 20 percent.

Roughly 30,000 MWh of electricity are traded on a daily average in the EEX spot market. Of the total volume traded on Thursday, 6,527 MWh were traded in individual hours and 43,560 MWh were traded in blocks (9,240 MWh peak load and 34,320 MWh base load blocks).

The EEX spot market now has 34 participants from seven countries trading electricity for the next day. The trading participants come from Austria (3), Belgium (1), Germany (21), the Netherlands (1), Spain (1), Switzerland (4) and the UK (3).
